Assemblymember Dr. Akilah Weber Issues Statement on Juneteenth National Holiday Observance

SACRAMENTO - Assemblymember Akilah Weber, M.D. (D-San Diego) releases the following statement regarding the significance of Juneteenth: “Juneteenth has been an important celebration for the Black community for over 150 years, and I am so happy that it will now be celebrated and discussed annually by all Americans. This celebration serves as an important reminder that there was a time in our nation when freedom was not granted to everyone, despite America winning its independence in 1776 and the Emancipation Proclamation becoming law in 1863. This Juneteenth, we embrace the new federal holiday, and we honor the resilience and strength of Black Americans who have enriched society through their sacrifices and struggles to achieve freedom. On June 19th, I encourage everyone to take some time to learn more about the history of slavery in America and pledge themselves to become a part of the solution to eliminating the many systemic obstacles and inequalities that still exist across many sectors today.”
