Sacramento, CA – Today, Dr. LaShae Sharp-Collins (D-San Diego) officially took the oath of office as the newly elected State Assemblymember for California’s 79th Assembly District, which encompasses parts of southeastern San Diego, El Cajon, La Mesa, and Lemon Grove, as well as the unincorporated communities of Bonita, La Presa, and Spring Valley.
"I am honored and humbled to represent the people of the 79th Assembly District. I plan to continue the work I have done for many years to advance the District, especially in helping support our most vulnerable residents,” said Assemblymember Dr. Sharp-Collins. “From strengthening our K-12 education, to fortifying our healthcare system, to continuing to address the housing crisis, there is so much work to be done. I look forward to working with my colleagues and our Assembly leadership to better the 79th District and the State as a whole."
Assemblymember Dr. Sharp-Collins attended San Diego State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in Africana Studies, a master’s degree in Education with an emphasis on Multicultural Counseling, and an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership. She later returned to San Diego State University as an adjunct professor in the Department of Africana Studies. She also served as District Director for former Assemblymember Dr. Shirley N. Weber, who is now California’s Secretary of State.
Prior to her election to the State Assembly, Dr. Sharp-Collins served as the Community Engagement Specialist for the San Diego County Office of Education, where she collaborated with 42 school districts and supported over 500,000 students.
In the Assembly, Assemblymember Dr. Sharp-Collins will prioritize equity in K-12 and higher education, support the aging population, and champion public safety.
