Assemblymember Shirley Weber Seeking To Save Lives with AB 392

Sacramento - Assemblymember Weber (D) San Diego stands behind AB 932 that aims to change the standards for when law enforcement can use lethal force. “Most people think lethal force is something that is only used as a last resort and yet our policies don’t teach us that,” says Assemblymember Weber. This issue was brought further into the spotlight when Stephon Clark, an unarmed black man, was killed by police officers when they mistook his cellphone for a gun. A narrative heard often and disproportionately in communities of color. “We need a policy that says you don’t use lethal force unless you, as an officer, are in danger of your own life and being harmed or someone in the immediate community is going to be harmed…you only use lethal force when absolutely necessary.” Watch this video to hear more from the Assemblymember Weber.
