SAN DIEGO, CA— Today, Assemblymember Akilah Weber, M.D. (D-79) hosted the 7th Annual Perfect Attendance Ceremony at SeaWorld San Diego. In recognition of Attendance Awareness Month in September, each K-12 school district located in the 79th Assembly District were invited to an “attendance challenge.” At the end of the academic school year in June, students with perfect attendance for the entire year are rewarded with a special recognition ceremony and a free day of fun at SeaWorld San Diego.
“This year we have over 400 students who are being recognized for perfect attendance during the September 2021 to June 2022 school year,” said Assemblymember Dr. Akilah Weber.
The much anticipated event was started by former Assemblymember, Dr. Shirley Weber, a college professor and education advocate, now serving as California’s Secretary of State.
“One of the ways to close the achievement gap is to make sure children are attending school. Students with high attendance are more likely to graduate, score higher on academic tests, college entrance exams and are less likely to get into trouble and be part of the criminal justice system,” added Assemblymember Dr. Akilah Weber.
Eight schools participated in the 2022 event; Bonita Vista Middle School, Eastlake High School, Eastlake Middle School, Grainger Junior High School, Helix High School, Olympian High School, Otay Ranch High School and Sweetwater High School. In addition to the medallions, each student honoree received a California State Seal Award and two complimentary tickets to Sea World for themselves and a parent or guardian.
The invitation-only event is sponsored by SeaWorld San Diego and Cox Communications.
